7 BENEFITS OF EXERCISE FOR DIABETICS (Francis Owusu-Banahene T/Dr)
Diabetes mellitus (sweet urine), as scientifically known, is a metabolic disorder, meaning it alters the body’s processing and distribution of macronutrients (e.g., protein, fats, and carbohydrates).
Diabetes occurs when there is consistently more
glucose in a person’s blood than is necessary for normal body functioning. The
elevated glucose levels in the blood may be due to:
- The kidney’s inability
to filter all the glucose in the blood The unrefined glucose starts
showing up in the urine, hence the term “sweet urine”—diabetes mellitus.
- When there are excess
fat deposits in the blood or within the arterial walls. These fat deposits
impede the activity of insulin in transferring glucose to the various
organs of the body, as in the case of type 2 diabetes.
- When the body (pancreas)
can’t produce insulin or produces it in very low amounts, as in the case
of type 1 diabetes,
- Metabolic syndrome:
central obesity, high levels of triglycerides, inadequate levels of HDL,
and increased waistline
WHAT RISK DO DIABETICS RUN?
Diabetes is associated with many complications,
especially when proper treatment is ignored.
- Circulatory disorders include foot and
hand gangrene, impotence, chest pain, and heart attacks.
- Eye disorders: deterioration of the
small eye vessels leading to retinopathy (vision lessening) and eventually
death
- Kidney or renal failure due to circulatory
deterioration of the kidney vessels
- Damaged peripheral
nerves
leading to polyneuropathy include severe pain in the leg, loss of
sensitivity, and tingling sensations.
ADEQUATE DIABETES TREATMENT
The good news is that, while there may be
several diabetes-related complications, they would not necessarily occur when
one strictly complies with treatment. At least, diabetes can be managed or
controlled, and while a potential cure (reversion) is also possible, it should
be noted that that can’t be achieved by a single magic pill or a temporary
behavioral change. Rather, it is a consequence of radical, resolute, and
permanent lifestyle changes in certain respects, such as regular physical
activities and exercise.
EXERCISE & ADEQUATE DIABETES TREATMENT
Physical activities include any body movement
carried out during a specific period of time, whether at work, work-related, or
during leisure time. Exercise, like all other physical activities, considerably
increases metabolism and energy consumption and serves as a major factor that
protects the body against even chronic diseases.
The following are some major benefits of
exercise in adequate diabetes treatment:
- Improves mood: stress is considered a
major factor responsible for the growth in the cases of diabetes. Regular
exercise helps improve one’s mood by releasing endorphins. Endorphins help
reduce stress and anxiety, improve intellectual performance, and enhance a
sense of well-being.
- Increases the level of
good cholesterol (HDL): a common risk factor for diabetes is high levels of
bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides in the blood as opposed to good
cholesterol (HDL). Regular exercise helps in correcting this by increasing
the levels of HDL (which has a protective role in the circulatory system)
as well as reducing the levels of LDL and triglycerides in the blood.
- improves metabolism: as indicated above,
diabetes is an indication of an altered normal metabolic process. Regular
exercise helps improve mineral and hormonal metabolism.
- reduces the level of
glucose: regular
exercise helps burn glucose and improves the way insulin works.
- Improves circulation: regular exercise
activates proper circulation by promoting the vasodilation of the blood
vessels.
- stabilizes blood
pressure: regular
exercise strengthens the cardiac muscles, thus increasing their
performance. Proper heart efficiency coupled with proper circulation helps
stabilize blood pressure.
- Maintain and control
weight: obesity
produces insulin resistance, which is also a major risk factor for
diabetes. Regular exercise is definitely the most effective method for
lowering and maintaining weight.
